The Nunavut Housing Corporation Kivalliq District Office
has a concern of the proposed pond drainage and land fill for the following
reasons:
¨
The marshy area
may not be suitable for building foundations, due to the silt build-up following
many years of spring thaw and fall heavy rain run-off. This type of condition
can cause continuous shifting in building structure, leading to ongoing costly
repairs required to minor and/or major damages.
¨
The pond is a
major drainage point to the bay for the north-eastern end of the Hamlet of
Arviat, and changes made will cause a negative impact to the lot conditions and
general health of the public housing tenants and private homeowners who are part
of the affected draining system.
We realize there is a challenge in meeting the land
drainage because of the natural flatness of Arviat, but the proposed changes in
this area may add more difficulties in finding ways to address this problem. Due
to the highly potential building foundation problems, the Nunavut Housing
Corporation will not consider this area for future use in the public housing and
homeownership programs it delivers.
