Hi Patrick
-
There was no
release of effluent from the TCA in 2003.
During the period in question, the minewater
was pumped into Cell 5. This cell
is bounded by a topographic high on the "environment" side, and by internal dams
which isolate the water from the adjoining Ponds #1 and #2 and Cell 2. Standard practice at Lupin over the past few years, come spring thaw, is to pump
the water from Cell 5 into Cell #4, which serves as a primary polishing pond. In
subsequent years, it is then allowed to flow into Pond #1, then Pond #2, before
being released into the environment.
In short, that
minewater won't see the environment for a number of
years yet.

Hi
Mike,
I have a
question arising from a comment made by DIAND Water Resources
staff.
During November
and December 2003 approximately 4850 cu m of water was pumped from the
underground workings into presumably the tailings compoundment area (TCA).
Since no
sampling at station 925-10 occurred, it is safe to presume that there was no
discharge from the TCA due to management practices; or that everything is so
thoroughly frozen so that movement of any water from the TCA is prevented (or
perhaps a combination of the two).
Thanks,
Mine
