To the Nunavut Impact Review Board : As one who has spent many summers canoeing and exploring the breath-taking and priceless barrens in Nunavut and Northwest Territory, and who has noticed over the recent years the drastic decline in the size of the Beverly Herd, I strongly urge the Board to deny the application of Uravan Minerals for a permit to develop uranium properties in the Garry Lake region, a prime calving ground for the Beverly Herd. Uravan should be as good a corporate citizen as De Beers and the other mining enterprises who are cooperating in preserving this unique resource. The loss of the herd will not only impact adversely those who rely on caribou for sustenance, but it would represent irreparable damage to one of Canada's great natural resources. While I am not a Canadian national, my father was, and I have always regarded Canada as a second home. I treasure the priceless far north. Please preserve it, not only for your present citizens and their descendants, but also for people like me, indeed, for the world. The barrens are like the Everglades - unique - and if we lose them and their wildlife, they're gone forever. Respectfully, Peter L. Albrecht 26 High Road Newbury, MA 01951-1234 USA
