File 08EN037 (Uravan - Garry Lake)From: Harris, David [DavidHarris@SierraSystems.com] Sent: December 4, 2008 10:20 AM To: lpayette@nirb.ca Cc: Strahl.C@parl.gc.ca; DShewchuk@gov.nu.ca; Prentice.J@parl.gc.ca Subject: File 08EN037 (Uravan - Garry Lake) Recent surveys have shown an alarming decrease in the numbers of caribou in the Beverly herd. An unprecedented decrease of 98% means that this is surely no time to approve industrial/commercial activities right in the herd's calving grounds. The figures are so sufficiently extreme that they are hard to believe as being complete or accurate. These figures need to be verified in a more complete and broad cencus as quickly as possible, so that we can get a clearer picture of the real situation, and use those figures to determine future actions. In the meantime, it is imperative that we put a moratorium on any activity in those critical calving grounds. The future of one of Canada's and indeed the world's most remarkable species should not be compromised for short term gain.
