It is well documented that the herd is in serious decline, and such a development may constitute its death knell. A mine - of a toxic substance at that - is a short term measure that will provide at best, a few temporary jobs for local people, and will enrich a southern corporation which has no deep concern about the local economy. Healthy caribou herds have sustained the people of Nunavut and the North West territories, not only physically but spiritually, since time immemorial. In Biblical terms this is like selling your soul for a mess of potage.
