Herds in this area have already been dramatically diminished in recent years. The caribou is an iconic mammal of the Canadian north, valuable for its place in the ecosystem. Residents of NWT, Nunavut, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan depend on these animals both culturally and physically as a source of millions of dollars worth of meat. A recently released survey has revealed that this herd has been diminished by a shocking 98% in the last fourteen years. While industrial activity may not be the sole cause of their decline, it is certain that the caribou's recovery will be rendered next to impossible if their calving grounds are taken over by mining. Therefore I feel it is essential that the NIRB moves to protect the caribou by declining Uravan's application. Sincerely, Judith Berry
