As you know, you have one of the ecologically unique jewels of the world in the Barren Lands of Nunavut. I had the pleasure of exploring the Barren Lands by canoe this summer. The Beverly Caribou Herd is a big part of what makes the Barren Lands such a wonderful area. Unfortunately, the Beverly-Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board recently reported that the herd has all but disappeared. The Uravan Garry Lake Project sits in the calving grounds of the Beverly Caribou Herd. Opening the calving grounds to increased industrial activity with the approval of this permit would be precedent setting and would, in my opinion, make it that much more difficult for the herd to survive. I hope you can set an example for us here in the States and look at the BIG PICTURE by helping to preserve one of your greatest natural and historic areas, The Barren Lands. Sincerely, Kevin Browngoehl MD
