By chance I chose to spend my vacations the past two summers (and will in 2009) in the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary canoeing and walking the land. I am a changed person for the experience, but was disappointed to see so few caribou. It is therefore with considerable alarm that I see that the Beverly Herd is estimated to have declined by 98%. Given my reading over the years about our tundra areas, caribou have almost a mythic dimension in my sense of our country. I can see no recovery possible for this herd should their calving grounds be disrupted by the proposed project. I would regard that as a profound tragedy for this country if this herd furthur declines or is lost by our actions. This inspiring landscape would never be the same. I implore you to consider the right of caribou and those who depend upon them for food and/or soul-food to figure more strongly in whether development of any sort should occur in the Garry Lake area. Thankyou for considering my submission and all those that seek to preserve our northern ecology. Sincerely yours, Tom Mayberry R.R. # 4, Ingersoll, Ontario, N5C 3J7 519-485-2112
