This area is in the calving grounds of the Beverly Caribou Herd. In a recent survey of the herd (June 2008), the Beverly-Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board found that the population of the Beverly herd has crashed. Since the early '90s, they estimate that the population of the herd has dropped 98%. The survey also discovered that the number of calves is only 1/5th the normal number. Even if we can't conclusively ascertain what caused this catastrophic collapse, it is certain that the recovery of the herd will be impossible if the calving grounds are disturbed. Please help protect the Beverly herd and other Barren Grounds caribou. Thank you. Brenda Schafer
