I took a canoe trip through the Barren Lands in 2005 . The stunning isolation and dramatic landscapes lived up to all my expectations except one - we saw very little wildlife and whilst we did see 2 or 3 Caribou there were no signs of the thundering herds I had read about and hoped we might see. I know there are several possible explanations but all too frequently we heard that ' we should have been here last year or the year before that...' And at that point you think that whatever the definitive evidence may or may not be , permitting industrial exploitation of one of our world's last true wilderness areas cannot be a good thing. Realising that there are people whose way of life and even existence, depends on this same wildlife puts things in an even more serious perspective. I therefore urge you to turn down the Uravan application. Amongst many others my children and grandchildren will thank you. Yours sincerely, Brian Sharpe Glenorchy New Zealand
