From: Allan Jacobs [allan.jacobs@sympatico.ca] Sent: December 9, 2008 5:52 AM To: lpayette@nirb.ca Cc: Allan Jacobs Subject: Uravan Garry Lake Project, NIRB File 08EN037 I'm a southerner who has never lived north of 60; I have only visited there, 10 times for a total stay of about half a year. For that reason, I'm hesitant to interfere in northern affairs. I'm appalled however by the reports of the decline of the Beverly caribou herd. If these reports are correct, the herd is on the verge of disappearing and with it a way of life. That would be an ecological disaster, drawing worldwide attention. The chance to see the barrenland herds is a major, though by no means the only, reason why I and so many others have travelled so often there. I have seen herds of more than a thousand only twice, a profoundly moving experience worth the entire and not inconsiderable expense of the trip. Were that herd to disappear, I might still go to the area, which has so much else to offer, but much of the attraction would be gone. Until the cause of the decline has been determined, I would suggest it prudent to curtail major intrusions into the sensitive areas. Thanks for your consideration of my opinions.
