From: ffdjm@alaska.net Sent: December 8, 2008 6:58 PM To: lpayette@nirb.ca Subject: Uravan Garry Lake Project, NIRB File 08EN037 Gentlemen: Last summer I spent over CDN$5000 on a canoe trip into Great Bear Lake. On an earlier trip north of Great Bear Lake I saw caribou migrating past my camp. This was one of the high points of my trip. Now I hear that Canada is contemplating a uranium mine in the calving grounds of the Beverly caribou herd. The herd has recently suffered a 98 per cent loss in numbers. The mine will surely finish the herd, and my prospects for caribou viewing in the entire area. Uranium mining has all sorts of environmental problems. The old mine at Port Radium has required remediation to prevent escape of uranium dust into the waters of Great Bear Lake. Uranium dust has been implicated in health problems of Indians around mines in Utah. Surely Canada does not have to put a uranium mine in that area of all places! I urge you to deny the application if not for the sake of innocent caribou, but for the sake of those who depend on them for sustenance. Sincerely, Douglas McIntosh POB 80970 Fairbanks Alaska 99708 USA
