It is known that the number of caribou in the Beverly herd was drastically reduced in the past years. The recovery of this caribou herd would be rendered almost impossible if there is industrial activity in the most critical part of their habitat. Therefore I urge you to deny the application of Uravan Minerals Inc. It is essential that the NIRB send a clear signal to the mining industry that mineral development on the calving grounds is out of the question. Not protecting caribou also contradicts the broad desires of Canadians to see this iconic species and its habitat protected for their children and grandchildren. Although living far from Nunavut I am attached to this part oft he world. I had the privilege to make a canoe trip in the Barrens this summer and also in earlier years and to see this vast unspoilt wilderness and its rich wildlife. I think it is the responsibility of Canada to whom this tract of land is entrusted to keep it in its pristine state for future generations. Thank you for your considering the above mentioned aspects. Sincerely yours, H. Wiedemar -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Wiedemar Neuhausweg 1 CH-3063 Ittigen / Switzerland hans.wiedemar@swissonline.ch
