From: John Ghent [john@ghent.ca] Sent: December 9, 2008 8:13 AM To: lpayette@nirb.ca Subject: Uravan Garry Lake Project, NIRB File 08EN037 I have become aware of the devastating decline in the population of the Beverly Lands Caribou herd. The Globe and Mail has recently reported on this matter. The decline of the Caribou herd is a concern to all Canadians (and also to people outside of Canada) who value wild places and who seek to preserve areas that are critical to the preservation of this herd. It is my understanding that the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) will be considering an application from Uravan Minerals for development of their uranium property on the calving grounds of the Beverly herd. If this application is approved, it will further the collapse of the carbou herd and will compromise any chance of the herd recovering. I am respectfully requesting that the above noted aplication be denied. Alternatively, if the matter is to be further consider, that a full Environmental Assessment be undertaken to understand the impact of the proposed indusrial activity on the ecosystem, including the impact on the Caribou herd, before any decision is made to allow indusrial activity in this area. Thank you for considering these comments. John Ghent -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1406 Kathleen Crescent Oakville, ON L6H 2G7
