The proposed area is inside the calving grounds of the Beverly Caribou Herd. In a recent survey of the herd on their calving grounds (June 2008), the Beverly-Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board found that the population of the herd has crashed. Since the last census in the early '90s, they estimate that the population of the herd has dropped 98%. The survey also discovered that the number of calves is only 1/5th the normal number. Even if we ignore what might have caused this catastrophic collapse, it is obvious that the recovery of the herd will be impossible if their calving grounds are disturbed. Please help protect the Beverly herd and other Barren Grounds caribou. Thank you. Sam Harrison Middlebury College 2011 www.transarcticexpedition.com
