Last summer I was canoeing in the traditional area for the Beverly caribou herd for 10 days and saw not one caribou where there should have been thousands! Clearly, the herd is being impacted by some unusual activity and their recovery requires that their calving ground be protected to the utmost. Protection of the herd is essential to the wellbeing of aboriginal people in the area who depend on the caribou for food, and to the small but important tourist industry that brings people from around the world to the area.
