From: Vicky [VickyJ@theedge.ca] Sent: December 11, 2008 5:46 PM To: lpayette@nirb.ca Subject: Uravan Garry Lake Project, NIRB File 08EN037 Hello and a merry Christmas to all my colleagues at NIRB! I’m writing to you as a private citizen, though in my work as a biologist I spent 10 days crisscrossing the Barrens between Baker Lake and Arviat, doing shorebird surveys for the federal government. I saw very few caribou, and even fewer with calves. I am disturbed by the recent caribou survey estimates, as they match up with what I saw this summer. Are we really going to go for the short term benefits of uranium (and other) mining and associated disturbance, at the long term impacts to caribou? That’s like throwing out the baby with the bath water. I urge you to listen carefully to people who still make their living off the land. They will tell you that the caribou are a priceless resource that should not be squandered for short-term mining benefits. I urge NIRB to think long term. Enough is enough. Sincerely, Vicky Johnston Yellowknife
