I was at Beverly Lake this summer on a regular canoe trip and noticed the small number of Cariboo in the area. On return I learned the shocking news that the herd is now only 2% of its former size. Clearly the herd is vulnerable and on the edge of extinction and starting new mineral leases in their calving grounds would be another and perhaps the final blow. Moreover, should sufficient uranium to be found, a mine would be out of the question. That would certainly finish the Cariboo herd and the toxic effects of the waste from such a mine would be a blight on the North for time immemorial. I urge you to do the reasonable thing, take the precautionary approach. Any other approach is gambling with the future of the Cariboo, with the environment of the North, and there is little margin for error.
